A lot to learn from Chicken Little
In an old fable, Chicken Little (in Britain, we hear, it’s Henny Penny) gets hit on the head by a leaf or an acorn and panics, thinking the sky is falling. Here, for the internet age, is a slightly updated retelling I find amusing and instructive: The Story of Chicken Little. In 1943, during World War II, Walt Disney Productions made an animated version of the tale, at the request of the United States government, with the aim of counteracting Nazi propaganda tactics. To say nothing about ordinary folks, by false propaganda even sincere people dedicated to following a spiritual path … [Read more...] about A lot to learn from Chicken Little
On pilgrimage, 1985: The lost article
A few weeks back, while looking through some old files at the Hare Krishna temple in Brooklyn, I came upon a copy of a newsletter I had edited in 1985 while traveling throughout India with a party of pilgrims. Padayātrā Newsletter Number 13, October 1985 Not Quite Back to Godhead The second and third articles I wrote for the Padayātrā “On Pilgrimage” series have now appeared in Back to Godhead. I found out some weeks ago … [Read more...] about On pilgrimage, 1985: The lost article

The VedaBase Unicode plugin
Now text you copy and paste from the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase® can come out right -- diacritics and all -- for anyone you share it with. A simple, free plugin for the desktop VedaBase program makes your text come out in Unicode. That means you can paste your text in email, on Facebook, or wherever and the diacritic marks will come out right: Kṛṣṇa, not Kåñëa. To find out more, to get the plugin, and to find out how to plug it in and use it, go to https://vedabaseunicode.wordpress.com. … [Read more...] about The VedaBase Unicode plugin
1970 letters shed new light on how “Gita As It Is” came to be
BBT press release The BBT is releasing a trove of more than a dozen letters exchanged between Hayagriva Dasa and Jayadvaita Dasa about Bhagavad-gita As It Is while the book was in production. The letters show that the translations especially, far from being Srila Prabhupada’s words lightly edited for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, were the outcome of a multifaceted editorial process. The letters give us some insight into what that process was. The letters, which are preserved at the Bhaktivedanta Archives, thus help document the history of Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Hayagriva … [Read more...] about 1970 letters shed new light on how “Gita As It Is” came to be
