“Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Kīrtana Standards,” installment 23
From the earliest days of ISKCON, Śrīla Prabhupāda chanted:
govinda jaya jaya, gopāla jaya jaya
rādhā-ramaṇa hari, govinda jaya jaya
In San Francisco in 1967, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught Mukunda Mahārāja this chant.1 Sometimes Śrīla Prabhupāda would lead chanting of “Govinda jaya jaya” after giving class or would have the devotees chant it.2
In 1968 Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote to one new devotee:
Please go on chanting “Govinda Jaya Jaya, Govinda [sic] Jaya Jaya, Radha Ramana Hari, Govinda Jaya Jaya”, along with “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama, Rama, Hare Hare.” And in any condition you shall be happy without any doubt.3
Similarly, Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote to Satsvarūpa:
So far as prayers, you may sing Hare Krishna, Govinda Jaya Jaya, and Govindam Adi purusam.4
And regarding bathing the Deities, Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote:
Chant Hare Krishna, Cintamani, Govinda Jaya Jaya, etc., like that.5
He summed things up this way:
As soon as you chant Govinda Jaya Jaya and Hare Krishna Mahamantra you are no longer in the material world.6
